Introduction

Hello Everyone!

I’m Akshay, and I’m a 15 year old junior at West Allegheny High School (near Pittsburgh, PA, USA). I was born in Madras (Chennai), moved to Singapore when I was 60 days old, and then moved to Pittsburgh at age 7. Quite a bit of change, but life’s definitely been good!

I live with my awesome family ... my elder brother Ajay, my mom Mala, and my dad Hari. Ever since I was little, all three of them have supported my singing greatly. Actually, when I was about 6, I took singing lessons every Saturday in Singapore for about a year and my mom and I would have to take the 40 minute bus ride there and back! My dad and brother are my critics and they make sure that I perfect every song before I post it for you all.

As I said, I did take lessons about 10 years ago in Singapore... but between that and my life here at Taranaa, music was not a part of my life. Once I moved to America, school and tennis were the only things that I really focused on and singing was not even something that was ever on my mind. However, a couple of years back, my parents convinced me to start watching Sa Re Ga Ma Pa on Zee TV. Once I started watching, I was hooked and just loved the “Hindi Film” genre and couldn’t get enough of it. Although I couldn’t understand the language I simply loved the compositions and the flow of words. Himesh Reshammiya caused the revival of singing in my life... I loved his style and still do today.

I started to sing along with originals after I watched Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, and one fine evening, I sang “Chaand Sifarish” at the Utsav Diwali Festival (Pittsburgh) in 2006 with a karaoke track that my dad made from the original song. Even though the crowd was quite small, it was a great experience for me and was practice for the upcoming Taranaa Competition in Pittsburgh! That was the experience of a life-time. Nervous as can be, I sang “Kal Ho Na Ho” in the first round, “Main Hoon Don” in the second round and “Chaand Sifarish” as a third number. Earning second place made me ecstatic and I made singing a part of my life again. That obviously led me to joining this wonderful Taranaa family which I can’t get enough of!!!

I would like to give thanks from the bottom of my heart to Harshal ji, Pradeep ji, the musicians of Taranaa, the members of Taranaa, and everyone involved with Taranna for welcoming and accepting me into this amazing family! Thanks a ton.

My special thanks to Bilal bhai for recommending me for TSOM. I would like to also extend my heart-felt thanks to Rajendra Ji.

Wow! Seems like a lot for 15 years huh? :-)

Aapke Sawaal, Mere Jawaab

Who encouraged you to sing early on?

Definitely throughout my life it has been my parents... they have taken me to singing lessons and really supported my singing since day one. Without them music would not be in my life... it was my parents who found the Diwali festival and the Taranaa competition for me to sing at, although that was just a small showing of their support.
Himesh Reshammiya had a pretty big impact on me as well. When I first heard him sing on Sa Re Ga Ma it really inspired me to start singing (again). Initially all I would sing would be his numbers! But he definitely had that special something in his voice that inspired me

How encouraging is your family towards your pursuit of musical interest? Does your spouse have hang-ups about your staring at the "red screen" at every given opportunity? ;)
My family could not be any more encouraging and supportive towards my musical interests. As I said, my brother and my dad are my critics, and my mom is always finding new places for me to sing! I couldn’t ask for anything better in terms of support... they understand that at times High School is more important to me than singing and don’t push me too hard... it’s just great.
About the spouse... I don’t think I’m quite ready for marriage yet :-)

Can you describe in your words what good singing means ? And what is the most important aspect of good singing, sur, taal, diction, poetry, feelings, or sounding like the original singer?
Good singing... it has that special touch that nobody can explain. To me it’s conveying the lyrics of the song in such a way that even one who does not understand the language knows what the artist is trying to say. Sur and taal are the basic components of this, but diction and feeling are the more complex components that everyone tries to master.

Would you like to share some weaknesses of your singing and your effort to improve them?
Definitely one thing that I have heard is that my low notes are not as strong as my middle range or high range notes. I think over time I will improve on this, and the best way to improve low notes is to just keep singing! Low and high notes are usually what make a song stand out from others... so I will try my hardest to improve on my low notes.

Do you think certain foods affect or help your singing?
This is probably more personal to each person... but to me, over a long period of time what I eat does not affect my voice. But obviously eating or drinking a lot just prior to singing will take away from voice quality.

If at all, you get a chance to choose and sing with any male/female Bollywood singer, who would that be? Why?
Such a hard question!! I would have to go with Sunidhi Chauhan though. Her range and versatility are simply amazing... singing with her would be a dream come true!

Who do you style your singing after? If no one, then what do you think is your singing style?
I think at this point I don’t style my singing after anyone, but rather focus to try and make each song sound as close as possible to the original. Whether it be Shaan, Sonu Nigam, or Himesh, I think most would agree that a good rendition sounds very much like the original.

What aspects of Taraana.com made you decide to become a member?
The community, the amazing Karaoke tracks, and the activeness of Taranna were definitely the main aspects that made me join this family. I think that without an active group of singers and listeners, there’s no point to even singing!

If you have to suggest some improvements for Taraana.com what would they be?
Just one thing... a rewind and fast-forward button on the TKP!

Do you record in a studio or home? What equipment do you use for home recording?

I record at home:
Shure Mic
Yamaha MG82cx Mixer
Sony Headphones

Would you like to receive feedback in public (Taranaa forum) or through private messages? What aspects should be considered carefully while giving feedback in public?

Either way is fine. The most important aspect of giving feedback in public is to point out the faults, but at the same time point out all of the positives so that the singer knows that they have something to build off of. Also, while pointing out faults, giving suggestions to help fix the problems is extremely important, since if these are not given, the feedback is of no use. And of course, one should not offend when giving feedback... be critical but not rude.

Lastly, if you had a choice of choosing five new tracks for Taranaa library what would they be?
1) Main Agar Kahoon (Om Shanti Om) – Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal
2) Sau Dard Hai (Jaan-E-Mann) – Sonu Nigam
3) Tenu Leke (Salaam-E-Ishq) – Sonu Nigam, Mahalaxmi Iyer
4) Tu Hi Tu Satrangi Re (Dil Se) – Sonu Nigam, Kavita Krishnamurthy
5) Apne (Apne) – Sonu Nigam, Jayesh Gandhi, Jaspinder Narula
