Aniruddha Daptardar- Star of the Month, October 2007

Image:Aniruddha.jpg

Introduction

Hello Everyone,

My name is Aniruddha. Well, after coming to US, its mostly been 'Ani' :) ... I am in Seattle, WA working as Software Engineer for Microsoft Corporation for more than a year now ... I am from India originally and I am a proud 'Mumbaikar' from a growing town close to Mumbai (the city that never sleeps) called 'Dombivli'... Its a small town but with all the characteristics of a big city like Mumbai ... I miss it a lot after coming here in US ...

Music has been with me since my childhood as my parents have been very encouraging and supportive. My mother Dr. Mrs Vaidehi Daptardar is a principal of one of the very renowned colleges in Mumbai 'Somaiya Institute of technology' .. My dad (MBA) Mr. Shriram Daptardar is working as a General Manager in a Pharamaceutical company. I have a younger sister 'Sayali' who is in her final year of MSc (BioChem). Alongwith a great educational background, my parents have always inspired me and my sis to do more than just studies ... may it be sports or singing ... My father has a wonderful voice himself and has been my inspiration ... He is not trained but his talent and voice totally makes up for it ... Singing has always been my hobby and sometimes a little more than that whenever I got a chance to sing at various college shows on stage live and at private gatherings / functions ... but I never got around to take formal training ... Now I repent it but I am seriously thinking about it ... Its better late than never ... My friend Vaibhav (who is a member of Taranaa as well now) gets the credit to introduce me to the world of karaoke tracks ... Thats when I found Taranaa ... and I just love it here ... Its a little more than six months since I joined Taranaa and its been a wonderful joy ride so far !!

Apart from singing, I am into all types of sports like cricket, tennis, badminton ... I like all types of outdoor activities such as trekking, hiking, skiing etc ... adventure sports like rafting, sky-diving are total game for me ! I like to write blogs as well ( http://helloani.blogspot.com) and its a nice side hobby I have ... I am complete movie buff and can watch any number of movies in a day :) ...

Finally, thank you everyone for giving me this honour and opportunity ! This is a big milestone in my musical life so far and without all of your help and support this was not possible ... I would like to take this opportunity to thank my parents, my sweet little sis and my wife 'Mugdha' and all the Taranaa members for their constant support and appreciation ...

Warm Regards,
- Ani.

Aapke Sawaal, Mere Jawaab...
Who encouraged you to sing early on?

My father (Baba) ... As I said above, Baba is a wonderful singer himself. He hasnt learnt music but he is no less by any means... He can bring life to any party, any occasion with his sweet voice. He has always been my inspiration ... He has always been very supportive and critical as well at times whenever necessary. I think its in the genes ;) !

How encouraging is your family towards your pursuit of musical interest? Does your spouse have hang-ups about your staring at the "red screen" at every given opportunity? ;)

The support from the family has a big share to get me here ...My parents have always been very supportive. My family is a complete musical family :) .. my mom has a good voice and my sister sings as well and she has taken classical training ... So if you come to my house, there will always be some music in the background :) ... They are always waiting to listen to my songs and provide feedback ... My wife has also been very supportive and encouraging ... Even everyone in my in-law family appreciates and encourages my singing ! :)

Can you describe in your words what good singing means ? And what is the most important aspect of good singing, sur, taal, diction, poetry, feelings, or sounding like the original singer?

I would say singing is just like cooking ... Everyone has one's own recipe and taste .. :) But according to me, a good singer is the one who puts his heart into singing. He has to feel the song and the lyrics and not just sing it out. Sur, taal are important parts of it which can be achieved with practice but goos singing comes from the heart ... Sounding like the original singer is a definite plus but not at all a requirement ... Diction, yes very important ... A singer is the coordinator between the lyricist and audience ... so every word needs to have the right pronunciation and clarity ... So its the golden mix of everything ...

Would you like to share some weaknesses of your singing and your effort to improve them?
You will find tons of them in my songs... sometimes I tend to sing faster and go ahead of the music ... The recording has issues to put it mildly :) high pitch / classical songs get me :) ... But I think the important part is I want to improve and I am trying hard to ... I keep listening and singing the song thousands of times (literally) before recording it ... I keep listening to my old recordings and try to find flaws in them so that I can fix them in the new ones ... Also I post it the forum and listen to what you guys have to say about it ... the feedback definitely helps ...

Do you think certain foods affect or help your singing?
I am not sure .. I drink lot of water before recording and it helps me :) ... but I havent really paid attention to this part here much .. maybe I should ! ;)

If at all, you get a chance to choose and sing with any male/female Bollywood singer, who would that be? Why?
Oh! I dont have to think to answer this one at all ... It would definitely be with 'Sonu Nigam' !! He is my idol !! According to me, he is the best singer industry has ever had (No offense to anyeone :)) ... I just love his voice ... Any song - may it be happy, romantic, sad, bhajan, masti and many more, Sonu Nigam has done it remarkably well ... It will be my honour to sing with him !!

Who do you style your singing after? If no one, then what do you think is your singing style?
This is a hard one for me to say ... but some friends of mine call me 'Apna Sonu Nigam' ;) ... so I guess I tend to style my singing after him for obvious reasons :) ...

What aspects of Taraana.com made you decide to become a member?
I looked up online a bit before I decided on Taranaa as my destination. The decision was simple .. The variety of tracks and better tracks ! I guess the main point was the user base and the interaction amongst them ... You can always buy karaoke tracks online and sing to them but then the community on taranaa is what makes it so special ... I just love the community here ...

If you have to suggest some improvements for Taraana.com what would they be?
Taranaa is growing leaps and bounds now with new members joining in from all parts of the world ... We probably should improve our Taranaa player to make it more intuitive ... We should also think about having a better forum (I remember posting about this on the forum as well a while back) and a better website ...

Do you record in a studio or home? What equipment do you use for home recording?
I record at home ... With a normal chatting mic ... I think its about time, I bought a proper recording mic and improved on the recording part .. Sometime soon for sure ...

Would you like to receive feedback in public (Taranaa forum) or through private messages? What aspects should be considered carefully while giving feedback in public?
I dont think it matters which way the feedback is given ... What is important is that the feedback reaches the singer so that he can improve and become better and better ... However, while giving feedback in public, its very important to be 'positive' about the 'negative feedback' ...

Lastly, if you had a choice of choosing five new tracks for Taranaa library what would they be?
This is the hardest question ! 5 suddenly is such a small number !! But these are the ones I can think of , off the top of my head:
1. Zindagi Maut Na Ban Jaye
2. Rooth Na Jana (1942 A love Story)
3. Man Udhan Varyache (Aga Bai Arechya Marathi movie)
4. Tum Mujhe Yoon Bhula Na Paaooge (Pagla Kahin Ka) - One of my Rafi favourites ...
5. Tauba Tumhare Yeh Ishare (Chalte Chalte)
