Ashutosh Patel- Star of the Month - April 2008

Introduction

First of all A BIG Thank you to the TSOM team for considering me for SOM and another BIG one to all the Taranaa members, without whom it would not have been possible for me to appear on this page. My name is Ashutosh, which has been burned down to ASH in U.S.Originally, I am from Baroda, Gujarat, India. I came to U.S in Aug 2001, for my M.S in Plastics Engineering at UMASS. At present, I live in Lowell, MA with my wife Tejal and I am a Plastics Process Engineer by profession. Music has always been a part of my life. Since my childhood, I just loved listening to all the movie songs & ghazals. I even used to study with the music player turned on. Everybody in my family (Dad- Pravin, mom-Ramila, elder sis- Amiksha & elder bro- Ashish) loved listening to the radio & maybe that’s how I must have started liking listening to music??? My Big Brother, Big B as I call him, sings really good and has also performed in musical shows a couple of times. He has always been my source of inspiration & encouragement when it comes to singing. He is a die-hard Kishoreda fan and so am I. He did take classical music lessons and that is one thing I will regret all my life  for not taking those classes with him. I was just too lazy then and probably going to school itself was too much for me ;). All I wanted to do is play cricket . I have always liked singing but my singing had always been confined inside the four walls of my room. If it would have not been for Taranaa community, I still might not have had the confidence to sing out loud in open. I sincerely thank Harshal for starting Taranaa, and to all the taranites who have helped a lot in making a better singer out of me and I hope you still continue to do so in future.

Who encouraged you to sing early on?
My mother and my brother have always encouraged me to sing and also wanted me to take some training but as I said earlier I was too lazy but now I definitely am seriously thinking abt it

How encouraging is your family towards your pursuit of musical interest? Does your spouse have hang-ups about your staring at the "red screen" at every given opportunity? ;)
Well, my wife does have hang-ups with me spending a lot of time on taranaa but she really is supportive and she is the one who is trying to force me to take some formal training

Can you describe in your words what good singing means ? And what is the most important aspect of good singing, sur, taal, diction, poetry, feelings, or sounding like the original singer?
Good singing according to me is something that is pleasing to the ears. Voice quality according to me is very important factor to, along with all the other aspects mentioned above. A good singer or singing in my opinion is one which can keep the listener interested throughout the song and leave them asking for more (e.g: Azam’s singing ). For that I think voice quality, sur, taal, feelings and diction are most important…I would relate poetry to good song rather than good singing. Sounding like original is probably where every singer starts with till they get some recognition and then eventually come up with their own style. It’s just a means of getting instant recognition.

Would you like to share some weaknesses of your singing and your effort to improve them?
Ohh boy … I can write a book to answer this one  but to mention some, I would say maintaining sur at high notes, breath control and lack of energy are my major concerns. I am relying on my Taranaa friends to help me with these and yeh I already have started the breathing exercises that Vishal mentioned in one of his posts.

Do you think certain foods affect or help your singing?
Not sure if it does as I sing when I like, be it before eating something or after and the outcome seems to be the same (Bad ;))

If at all, you get a chance to choose and sing with any male/female Bollywood singer, who would that be? Why?
Kishoreda, without a doubt  I just wished I could have seen him perform live. At present I would go for Sonu Nigam… with intent to learn

Who do you style your singing after? If no one, then what do you think is your singing style?
Kishoreda

What aspects of Taraana.com made you decide to become a member?
Well I joined in 2005, when Taranaa was one of its kind so became a member instantly but yeh it is the extremely friendly & supportive taranaa community that has kept my membership alive.

If you have to suggest some improvements for Taraana.com what would they be?
Would like to have an option to pause in the tkp player.

Do you record in a studio or home? What equipment do you use for home recording?
I record on my laptop with a sennheiser mic at home and use audacity for recording

Would you like to receive feedback in public (Taranaa forum) or through private messages? What aspects should be considered carefully while giving feedback in public?
I would like to get the feedback in public as they are helpful for everybody. Yeh, for those who might not want to write in public are most welcome to send a PM. Well if the feedback is for me, I don’t mind even it is full of criticism, but yeh do mention why it was not liked so that I can improve on that aspect.

Lastly, if you had a choice of choosing five new tracks for Taranaa library what would they be?

  • - Tu Pee Aur Jee – Des Pardes
  • - Ek Raasta Hai Zindagi – Kaala Patthar
  • - Dekha Na Hai Re – Bombay to Goa
  • - Neendiya Se Jaagi Bahaar – Hero
  • - Thoda Hai Thode Ki – Khatta Meetha
