Music has been with me forever as far as I can remember. It runs in the family and it was no surprise when I started singing. My father is an Akashwani ( AIR ) singer, which would have been helpful but can be quite daunting most of the times. ;-) ..He is into oldies and to be honest I haven't heard anyone singing as close to Rafi Sahab as he is ! So just to avoid comparisons I would rarely sing Rafi's songs ;-)
As with every indian family, I was asked to concentrate more on studies than music too. Music therefore was more of a passion than a profession. But things started changing after I joined REC Trichy. I loved the big stage and I was quite honored to work with some of the best talents in the band. One of them went to Berkeley for BA in Music, other won contract as a sound engineer with Tips and some of them do local shows now. I was a lead singer for Hindi and people liked my Udit Narayan's renditions.
I had a thing for singing in different languages and I used to sing tamil songs too. Infact my first song was Sonia Sonia from movie Ratchakan and people still love it. Being a Maharashtrian from Nagpur it came as a shock to them. Well these days Vishalbhai sings Gujarati Bhajans at local Swaminarayan temple :-).
I wasn't into Karaoke much until I joined Michigan State University for my masters. It was more out of adversity that we started using Karaoke tunes as we didn't have a proper band at MSU. Chicago was a great place to find these but it was hard to find new songs and thanks to Taranaa I am back to singing again !
Taranaa has a great collection of songs and its great to showcase your talent and receive feedback from such a pool of amazing singers. I am still a novice when it comes to recording and I am sure the invaluable feedback from Taranaaites will help me a great deal. For this I am really grateful to the Taranaa Team. For had it not been for you, my desire to sing would not have crossed the closed quarters of a single auditorium.
