Software Installation

Recommended Equipment

Please refer to the below article for recommended equipment.

Hardware Setup

  • Connect a Dynamic Microphone to your computer's Microphone input
  • Connect a Headphone to the PC Headphones output
  • Wear the headphone while singing into your microphone

Alternately, you can connect your microphonce to a hardware mixer with effects and feed the mixer output to your computer's microphone input. This allows you to add effects (reverb, echo, panning) during recording rather than after recording. When you sing with reverb, you tend to sing more confidently (like in a bathroom!).

Procedure

1) Start Audacity

2) Click View, then click Float Control Toolbar. This undocks the Audacity control toolbar with Stop, Play, Record buttons.

3) Select Microphone channel so as to record just the voice, not music

Image:Microphone.jpg

4) Start Taranaa Karaoke Player (TKP), SELECT a track, PLAY it, STOP it.

5) Drag the audacity control toolbar over TKP so that it does not obstruct your view of TKP.

Image:Recording1.jpg

6) Click the Record button Image:Record.jpgin Audacity Control Toolbar. Adjust the microphone level, so that your voice is not too loud and not too soft. Image:MicLevel.jpg

7) Click Play button in TKP. This starts track playback with lyrics.

8) Read the lyrics and sing into your microphone. Audacity will record your voice and not the music.

9) Click Stop button Image:Stop.jpg in Audacity Control Toolbar after track is finished.

10) Now go back to Audacity and export your "raw" voice track as MP3, for keeps. Use 128kbps encoding, for MP3 compression as shown at the bottom of this page.

11) Drag and drop the Taranaa Karaoke Track residing in C:\Program Files\Taranaa.com\subscriptionTracks folder into Audacity. Or you can import audio from the Project menu.

Image:Import.jpg Image:Mixing.jpg

12) Use the Time Shift Tool Image:TimeShiftTool.jpg to align music track with voice track

Click the play button Image:Play.jpg to check the alignment. Repeat as many times as necessary. Use the ZOOM Image:Zoom.jpg button for finer alignment.

If you need to shift just a part of your voice track without shifting the entire track, you can use the Split Tool as below:

Image:AudacitySplit.jpg

  • Select the part of your voice track that you want to shift
  • Click the Edit menu then click Split
  • This will place your selection in a separate track
  • Using the Time Shift tool, shift the split track as desired

13) Export all tracks as MP3. Click the File menu then click Export As MP3. If you have not installed the Lame_Enc.dll MP3 encoder, you will be prompted to point to a location on your hard disk where you have downloaded the encoder.

How to add effects to your voice

You can add effects to your "dry" voice track, if you have not used a hardware mixer with effects during recording. This is a low-cost and portable alternative to adding a professional touch to your recording.

1) Remember that you should add effects only to your "dry" voice track and not the music track. You can remove the music track by clicking the x button in the top left corner of the music track. You can re-import the music track later for final mix-down.

2) It is a good idea to test your effect settings on a small piece (10-20 seconds) of your voice rather than the entire voice track. Select a small piece of your voice track using the Selection Tool Image:SelectionTool.jpg Drag the mouse over the piece of voice where you want to add an effect.

Image:SelectTrack.jpg

3) Click the Effects menu and select a desired effect. In the example below, we have selected the ECHO effect.

Image:SelectEcho.jpg Image:Echo.jpg

This effect has 2 parameters: Delay and Decay. Delay controls the time gap between (voice or waveform) repetitions. Decay controls the diminishing amplitute of successive repetitions. Keeping the decay factor at 0.1, you can first try various settings for delay. Then keeping the delay constant, you can try various settings for decay. Delay=0.2, Decay=0.2 gives a nice feel to your "raw" voice.

4) Once you have finalized your settings, you can select the entire track and add the effect to it. If you wish, you can add more pronouced effect to just part of your voice track.

You can use Control+A to select all of the track, or click the Edit menu, Select All.

Image:SelectAll.jpg

Finally re-import the Taranaa Karaoke Track and export a final stereo mix-down as MP3. Use 128 kbps encoding. Click File menu, click preferences, select File Formats tab (3rd tab from left). Select Bit Rate = 128. This is a one time setting that does not change until you change it.

Note that in this method of recording, the music track is never recorded, but mixed with your "wet" (post-processed) voice track. This gives you optimum recording quality.
