Manoaj Khatod - Star of the Month - July 2008
Image:Manoaj.JPG
Introduction

Hi everyone! I am Manoaj Khatod from Southaven MS. Welcome to my page. This is my space to share my music and thoughts related to the state of music and learning with technology. I would like to thank Taraana Team and all the members for giving me this opportunity! Originally I hail from Hyderabad India. I came to USA in 1996, and I’m professionally in Hospitality Industry. When I am not a hospitality manager, I am listening and working on new songs. I owe my love and passion for music to my father, who in late 70’s was a professional singer at All India Radio. He did his Masters in Hindustani Classical and always encouraged me to sing and get formal training, but not only I have never received any formal training in singing but I have seldom practiced as well, which I deeply regret. As I watched him perform and as time passed by, my interest grew in music. I reckon I would sing a little during my school and college days, although I took it on a more serious note just a few years back. I still remember my first singing performance when I was in 2nd garde and the song was “Mera jeevan Kora Kagaz”. My singing started from there. As a child I grew up listening to my father and old film songs that I was always fan of. I play little bit of tabla and at a very young age, was very fortunate to accompany my father during his ghazal recitals. My childhood memories of his voice often come to mind as I sing his compositions; like one ghazal posted here, is sung by him in late 70’s for All India Radio. As a tribute to him I have recreated and sung one of the ghazals composed and sung by him. I would like to dedicate this page to my father, Late. Kaushal Kumar Khatod. I feel Taraana is the best way I can pay tribute to my dad, and thanks to Taranna that I am able to fulfill his wish to some extent. I thank God, my family and friends for all the support, encouragement and love they have always showered. Taraana is a great contributor in enhancing our singing ability because of the wonderful feedback from fellow members. Thanks to Taraana for giving all of us such a great opportunity to sing and learn from each other! Thanks for visiting my page and I look forward to your feedback. Cheers!!

Who encouraged you to sing early on?

My Parents

How encouraging is your family towards your pursuit of musical interest? Does your spouse have hang-ups about your staring at the "red screen" at every given opportunity? ;)
My whole family especially my wife, Seemah is very supportive. She has incredible enthusiasm and patience to bear with my singing and listening to my recordings over and again to point the smallest of places where I need to correct myself. Infact she knows more songs than me; only the first few notes of a tune and she will get what song it is, where as I have to struggle... She encourages me to press on in this hobby and always puts up with my busy shedule. She does all this with grace and endurance and with a smile!!  Looks like she is going to continue to sharpen iron with iron to encourage me!! 

Can you describe in your words what good singing means ? And what is the most important aspect of good singing, sur, taal, diction, poetry, feelings, or sounding like the original singer?
What I learnt from my dad is “ Sangeet wohi hai jo apne se zyada doosre ko sunne mein acha lage” & Obiviously, without all the aspects of sur, taal & diction it will not happen. Understanding of proper synchronisation of sur, taal, breathing, diction and feelings is essential for an effective singing. Sounding like original singer is not important, although getting the original feelings in your singing is important.

Would you like to share some weaknesses of your singing and your effort to improve them?
Fast numbers, classical, and really high notes. I think practice is the key to overcome this and trust me I am trying.

Do you think certain foods affect or help your singing?
Nothing that I know of. I experience ease in singing while empty stomach.

If at all, you get a chance to choose and sing with any male/female Bollywood singer, who would that be? Why?
Male singer would be Rafi sahab or Sonu Nigam because of the versatlity in their singing. Female singer Alka Yagnik.

Who do you style your singing after? If no one, then what do you think is your singing style?
Of course my father. But in my observation we tend to follow the style of original singer since we have been listening to these particular songs for a long time. I try not to copy, although sometimes it just comes naturally and is unavoidable

What aspects of Taraana.com made you decide to become a member?
The community and the happenings.

If you have to suggest some improvements for Taraana.com what would they be?
• Just like all others I have the same request of Rewind/Fwd option. • Secondly some songs are like intrumental rather than Karaoke (eg. Gum hai kisi ke pyaar mein) • Some songs do not have chorus part, Chorus can enhances the quality.

Do you record in a studio or home? What equipment do you use for home recording?
I record at home. I use Shure SM58, Alises Mixer, Audacity and SonyAcid music studio.

Would you like to receive feedback in public (Taranaa forum) or through private messages? What aspects should be considered carefully while giving feedback in public?
Well, Public feedback is good so that every one can learn something. I think language and sentiments are the important things to considered.

Lastly, if you had a choice of choosing five new tracks for Taranaa library what would they be?

    1. Mera Jeevan Kora Kagaz (Kora Kagaz) 2. Khali hain Tere Bina (Paheli) 3. Deewani Deewana (Teri Bahon Mein) 4. Tu hi Meri Shab hai (Gangster) 5. Chan se jo tute Koi Sapna (OSO)
