Introduction

I sincerely thank Taranaa Star of The Month (TSOM) team and all Taranaaits to give me an opportunity to be on this page.
Here is a little about myself.
Hello everybody! Its indeed an honour to be SOM on Taranaa and in all humility I want to thank everyone associated with it in one way or another. Taranaa is a great platform not only for some excellent quality karaoke tracks, but also a medium to get constructive feedback from the very music savy members.

Firstly, let me introduce myself. All of you know me as Anjaan. I know many of you are curious to know me, my name and so on, and so I hope my picture is one introduction in itself. By the way, my name is Leena., yes you heard it right. Leena. Having been with the Taranaa community for almost a year, I now feel comfortable and quite like this community to formally introduce myself. When I joined it, I had no knowledge of what Taranaa actually was. All I knew is it had some very good quality karaoke tracks. Also, there was a member by name of Leena already present, hence I changed my id to Anjaan.

I am originally from Mumbai and currently living in the United States. My exposure to music started very early in life, as my mother used to sing and like all kids I used to try and imitate my mom. Inspite of my shy nature, I always participated in all the singing and dance competitions in school.

My first recognition came when I was in the 5th grade, when my redention of "Man Tadpat Hari Darshan" not only won me the first prize, but overnight, I was known in the whole school by my name and this felt so cool.

The biggest "prize" I got though, was from my dad, when he actually got up and came to congratulate me after hearing me sing "baiyaan na dharo" at a function few years ago. The tears I had in my eyes after he patted me on my back and said he was so proud of me, was the biggest prize I have ever received.

In college, I won most of the singing competitions .When I sang on the stage at college, I tasted my first 500 plus crowd stage performance, and after that there was no looking back. Over the years, I have performed in many stage shows, in Mumbai , including some orchestras, apart from some of the stage shows in the US at New York , Salt Lake City, Utah, and Houston, Texas.

I have been performing on stage for years and although I have started karaoke singing and taken a liking for it too. Singing live on stage is and will always be my preferred choice. Pretty much the same way as any actor would have bias towards live performance in theatre over a movie.

I had never thought of recording my songs, until 2001 when I released my first CD and thus began my journey with recordings. In fact this CD was very lucky for me, as I got my first major break after that to represent India at the Utsav events at the Winter Olympics held in 2002. Performing there was like a dream come true.

My only one regret I have in life is that I have never learnt singing, taken no singing classes ever and would have loved to have some classical background , so thats my biggest drawback. Nonetheless, I thank God for giving me this voice in form of His blessings and being with me all the way.

At first I knew nothing about recordings, but I am slowly learning the finer aspects of recording which does need a lot of time and commitment from the already hectic schedule at work etc.,so hopefully will learn some basics on that and find time for some classical training in the future.

Last but not the least I want to thank my family and friends, and without their support, I would not have come this far.

Who encouraged you to sing early on?

When I was a kid, I used to listen to my mom sing and thus began my love and passion for music.

How encouraging is your family towards your pursuit of musical interest? Does your spouse have hang-ups about your staring at the "grey screen" at every given opportunity? ;)
Thankfully my family and friends have always been very supportive of my musical inclination and have always encouraged me .

Can you describe in your words what good singing means ? And what is the most important aspect of good singing, sur, taal, diction, poetry, feelings, or sounding like the original singer?
Good singing is when a singer is able to convey to the listener through his or her renditions, the feelings and emotions contained in the song and touch the hearts of the listener.

Now regarding, sur, taal, diction, poetry and feelings I think they are all like the 5 fingers of a hand. Each one is equally important in its own aspect as they complement each other to make the completeness of a song. If sur( which is pitch) is missing, one wouldnt like to listen to that song. If taal ( which is rhythm) is missing, it would seem empty. If diction is not correct, it wont sound proper to our ears. If poetry is not that good, one might not like the song. And if feelings are not put into a song while singing, it will seem lifeless.

Would you like to share some weaknesses of your singing and your effort to improve them?
My greatest weakness is, when I start a song, in my excitement I usually start with a higher note. I am constantly working towards this and have tried to accomplish my goal of correcting it to a certain extent.

Do you think certain foods affect or help your singing?
Yes definately. Cold drinks/ ice cream .I try not to drink /eat these as they work themselves onto my throat . Infact, drinking warm water helps a lot.

If at all, you get a chance to choose and sing with any male/female Bollywood singer, who would that be? Why?
As far as male singers go, my all time favourite is Mohd Rafi. I know I will never be able to sing with him though. In today's times I think Sonu Nigam is one such person with whom I would love to sing if given a chance. And for female singers, I would love to sing with the versatile Asha Bhosle if given a chance. In recent times though, I have become a huge fan of Shreya Goshal .Even when she talks, it sounds musical.:)

Who do you style your singing after? If no one, then what do you think is your singing style?
I dont particularly style my singing after anyone, but I have been told on a number of occassions that Asha ji , Lata ji and Geeta Dutt's songs suit my voice and style.

What aspects of Taraana.com made you decide to become a member?
Originally what brought me to Taranaa was the quality of the tracks it made. But I have noticed, that in recent times, although the quality has remained the same, the quantity has decreased a lot.

If you have to suggest some improvements for Taraana.com what would they be?
4 things actually. (1) ability to control the tracks by way of some controls like pause, forward, backward on the player. (2) consider increasing the number of tracks available per week to atleast, say 5. (3)The single pc restriction of access to the software should be lifted as it does not give us the flexibility to use the system at a place other than home. (4)Finally , consider adding more nonHindi tracks as I am sure people would love to sing in other languages as well.

Do you record in a studio or home? What equipment do you use for home recording?
I record at home. i dont have any major equipement. I record with a Shure SM58 mic. I have yet to get a good mixer though. I use the audacity and also adobe audition for recordings.

Would you like to receive feedback in public (Taranaa forum) or through private messages? What aspects should be considered carefully while giving feedback in public?
Feedback is a definite must. Either way is fine. Cause without a feedback, I wont know where I am going wrong, and what aspets are needed for my improvements.

Lastly, if you had a choice of choosing five new tracks for Taranaa library what would they be?

  • Teri Ore ( Singh Is Kinng)
  • Mere Dholna( Bhulbhulaiya)
  • Pyaar bhare do sharmile nain( Ghazal)
  • Chotasa balama ( Asha Bhosle)
  • Mahi Ve Or Jiya na Jale ( Pakistani artist Faakhir)
