I was born in Bhopal (M.P) and brought up in BHEL Hardwar (Uttranchal). Like Sweta, I belong to a Rajput family too and my husband is from Varanasi. I am originally from Aeta, (UP) - my father’s hometown. My mom is from Jaipur (Rajasthan). I am absolutely fascinated with Rajasthani culture and tradition. I love the palaces, Rajasthani art & craft, clothes, dance, music and food. Music runs in my mom’s side of the family. My favorite singers are Lataji, Rafi Saheb, Ashaji, Kishore Da, Talat Mehmood and Manna Dey and from today’s generation, I like Shreya Ghoshal, Alka Yagnik, Shaan, Sonu Nigam, & Udit Narayan.

Kuntal Singh - Star of the Month, May 2007

Image:Kuntal_SOM_May2007.jpg

Before writing about myself, I like to thank “The Very Talented SOM Selection Committee” and all Taranaa members for giving me the opportunity to be seen here. It is an honor and my absolute pleasure to be here. I like to thank Harshal and the entire Taranaa Team for this wonderful platform for music lovers from all over the world, who can showcase there talent and share there passion for music. And, of course, for creating beautiful karaoke tracks! I came to know about Taranaa.com in February 2007 and I was amazed with the quality of the music and the talent in the community which really inspired me to join the Taranaa family.

Now about me ...
Hi, I am Kuntal Singh. I live in Reston,Virginia with my husband Sanjay and my son Kanishk. I work as a QA in a software company. They all are good singers and love songs from 50’s and 60’s (The golden era of the Indian Music Industry). No one is formally trained though. They all sing for sheer pleasure.

Every year, we used to go to my grandparents house in Jaipur for summer vacation and most of the evenings, we all used to sit in a circle and used to sing old Hindi movie songs. I grew up listening to my uncle (Mamaji) sing Rafiji’s song “Tu Mere Saamne Hai”, “Mein Yeh Soch Ker” etc and listening to my mom and my cousin sing beautiful numbers like “Piya Tose Naina Lage Re”, “Ja Re Badra Beri Ja”, “Zulmi Sang Aankh Ladi”, “Dil Dhadak Dhadak Ke” etc. And I think that’s how I started loving old Hindi movie songs. My favorite singers are Lataji, Rafi Saheb, Ashaji, Kishore Da, Talat Mehmood and Manna Dey and from today’s generation, I like Shreya Ghoshal, Alka Yagnik, Shaan, Sonu Nigam, & Udit Narayan.

I never got a chance to learn classical music when I was growing up and never realized how important it is for a singer. I thank my husband for encouraging me to learn and pursuit my interest in music. He suggested that I should take formal training. I have taken few lessons in classical music from a very good teacher here and I perform live, occasionally with very talented group of people.

Finally, I would like to thank everyone who has encouraged and supported me and special thanks to few, who were extremely helpful and kind; Azam, Vidyu, Parasmani, Leena, Sweta, Vishal, Harshal - thanks a bunch for all the help, guidance, encouragement and support!! I am presenting few of my favorite songs here. Listen to them at your own convenience and provide your invaluable feedback, suggestions, and comments.

Regards, Kuntal

Your Questions, My Answers ...

(1) Who encouraged you to sing early on?
My mom, my family, my family friends, my teachers :) , my friends and my husband. I began to sing at the age of two for the sheer instinctive pleasure of singing and the continued support & encouragement of my family & friends kept me going :)

(2) How encouraging is your family towards your pursuit of musical interest? Does your spouse have hang-ups about your staring at the "red screen" at every given opportunity? ;)
Very encouraging and that really matters! My family in India, they are all amazed that I am singing old Hindi movie songs in a foreign land. My mom and my bother loved the songs I have posted in Taranaa. My husband has been very encouraging. He has been the driving factor in pursuing my passion for music. My son likes the songs I sing and he also sings with Taranaa tracks. It gives me an immense pleasure when he sings beautifully.

And now for the second part of the question – honestly, the answer is “Yes” :).

(3) Can you describe in your words what good singing means? And what is the most important aspect of good singing, sur, taal, diction, poetry, feelings, or sounding like the original singer?
Good singing is when a singer not only sings the song in tune and able to maintain the beat but is also able to emote the feelings of the song. For good singing all these aspects are very important: good sense of sur, taal, diction, poetry, feelings (very very important) and also good breathing technique. That is also very important! I don’t think sounding like the original singer is important at all. Important thing is that singer should be able to make the audience feel sad when he/she sings sad song, make them happy when sings a fun song ...

(4) Would you like to share some weaknesses of your singing and your effort to improve them?
Oh gosh… too manyJ! Currently, the biggest problem is my recordings :) I am trying to fix it. I have bought some equipment but I need to do the setup now and not getting enough time to do that. Other weaknesses ... well, I think you all should point it out for me :) ... I know, I have problems with high notes, breathing, diction, feelings. I struggle with all of them but I try my best to sing well :)

(5) Do you think certain foods affect or help your singing?
I have heard that a singer should not eat pickles and oily stuff before singing. I avoid eating anything an hour before the performance :) I am a big tea drinker though! Love Ginger Tea! :) I don’t know if it helps in singing but I love it :)

(6) If at all, you get a chance to choose and sing with any male/female Bollywood singer, who would that be? Why?
I would love to sing with Shaan :) I love his voice and he seems like a simple and gentle person :).

(7) Who do you style your singing after? If no one, then what do you think is your singing style?
Lataji is my ideal. I am her biggest fan!! :)J

(8) What aspects of Taraana.com made you decide to become a member?
The lovely collection of tracks, very talented pool of singers, very friendly and safe atmosphere and the fact that you can share the songs across the globe!

(9) If you have to suggest some improvements for Taraana.com what would they be?
I think Taranaa Tarang page should be improved and should look more colorful like the Home page. It doesn’t give the good impression at first visit.

(10) Do you record in a studio or home? What equipment do you use for home recording?
I don’t have any setup yet but soon I will have something.

(11) Would you like to receive feedback in public (Taranaa forum) or through private messages? What aspects should be considered carefully while giving feedback in public?
Both ways are fine. I have seen this note from Taranaa at different blogs saying “All artists need some attention, appreciation and encouragement to rise and shine”. That is very true .That’s exactly what we should do. Encourage singers to sing and share more.

(12) Lastly, if you had a choice of choosing two new tracks for Taranaa library what would they be?
I was waiting for this question :) Ohh it is soooooo difficult to choose. There are so many songs. But these two songs are close to my heart.
