Sweta Singh - Star of the Month, April 2007

Image:Sweta.jpg

It's a pleasure and a surprise to find myself here. I still can't believe that this has really happened. I am thankful to Taranaa committee members and all the Taranites for considering me worthy of this opportunity. First of all let me start by extending my thanks to Taranaa for giving me a chance and platform to perform and show my talent across the globe. Taranaa has wonderfully talented singers and I am very happy being a part of this family. Music is a gift and I'd like to thank the Taranaa team for sharing their beautiful gift with all of us.

Now writing about self is most difficult thing do. Ask me to sing 10 songs and I won't have any problem but writing about self is a big, big task. My Name is Sweta Singh. I belong to a Rajput family, originally from Varanasi, UP. Music is in my family. I got inspired by seeing my dad and buas. One of my bua won lots of prestigious award in singing, all over Uttar Pradesh.

I have never taken any formal training or lessons in vocal music. I used to take part in my school and colleges singing competition and have won many awards. I have completed my graduation, from Purvanchal University. I got married and moved to Mumbai (city of dreams). My Hubby (Suraj) is a software Engineer. He plays a big role in my life; in fact he is the one who encouraged me to join Taranaa. I would like to thank him for supporting and encouraging me. Without his support, I would not have been on the centre stage of Taranaa.

For my hubby's job, we had to come to US in Jan 2003. I thought at that moment it would be difficult to continue singing and then I found most beautiful gift available on net -TARANAA.COM.

I have a very cute and naughty son (Aryan). He is 4 years of old. He always says mama you sing good. He enjoys when I sing. I see him interested in music and singing and would encourage and guide him.

Apart from music, I enjoy painting, playing tennis, volleyball and watching Indian soaps & movies. My favorite Bollywood singers are Kishore Kumar, Sonu Nigam, Alka Yagnik, Sheraya Ghosal, and of course, Lata Mangeshkar.

Finally, I would like to thank each and everyone who has supported, encouraged, helped, and guided me to reach this place. I don't want to name individuals because I am bound to miss some names.

Please listen to some of my songs and bless me with your valuable feedback and suggestions.

Thanks, Sweta

Your Questions, My Answers ...

(1) Who encouraged you to sing early on?
As I have mentioned earlier that I belong to a Rajput family. And in Rajput's singing is not that much encouraged. That’s why my parents didn't allow me to take any training in singing but I got encouragement from my bua, my friends and my teacher.

(2) How encouraging is your family towards your pursuit of musical interest? Does your spouse have hang-ups about your staring at the "red screen" at every given opportunity? ;)

They are very encouraging especially my hubby and my son. Every new song they listen they would ask me to sing which song they feel would suit my voice.

(3) Can you describe in your words what good singing means? And what is the most important aspect of good singing, sur, taal, diction, poetry, feelings, or sounding like the original singer?

In my view good singing is, if your songs touch peoples’ heart and they like it, that's good singing. I think that sounding like original singer is most important aspect because if you have good voice, you can improve your singing by taking music training but if you don't have a nice voice then you can't do anything ;)

(4) Would you like to share some weaknesses of your singing and your effort to improve them?

Yes, I do have problems in high notes and I am trying to improve it by some exercise.

(5) Do you think certain foods affect or help your singing?

Not exactly :) I eat everything whatever I like to, but I just do gargle before recording :). It helps me in my singing.

(6) If at all, you get a chance to choose and sing with any male/female Bollywood singer, who would that be? Why?

I would love to sing with one and only Sonu Nigam because I am his biggest fan. And he is a gem of Bollywood.

(7) Who do you style your singing after? If no one, then what do you think is your singing style?

Peoples say my voice suites on Asha ji's And Alisha Chinoies songs :) I don't know how true it is :)

(8) What aspects of Taraana.com made you decide to become a member?

The wonderful song collections and very good concepts of Taranaa Tarang! I have never seen any place like Taranaa in the entire globe. There are so many talented singers, who are working as a big family and helping new singers gain confidence and improve there singing.

(9) If you have to suggest some improvements for Taraana.com what would they be?

They should have a point-based SOM selection. Every song of the week or any small contest within a month should be assigned points (will be assigned by pre-selected judges or TSOM Committee members) to each individual based on their singing. Whoever has highest point at the end of the month should be the SOM. But prior to that SOMs won't receive any points. This will encourage lot of participation in song of weeks and other contest:)

(10) Do you record in a studio or home? What equipment do you use for home recording?

I record in home. I don't have much equipment just a laptop and a simple mic but I am planning to get all the recording equipment recommended on Taranaa Tarang :)

(11) Would you like to receive feedback in public (Taranaa forum) or through private messages? What aspects should be considered carefully while giving feedback in public?

Both ways are fine with me. While giving feedback in public, they should concentrate on improvement with both, like the problems area and the suggestion to improve them and also should not offend anyone.

(12) Lastly, if you had a choice of choosing five new tracks for Taranaa library what would they be?
