Introduction

I sincerely thank Taranaa Star of The Month (TSOM) team and all Taranaaits to give me an opportunity to be on this page.
Here is a little about myself.
My name is Vaibhav (which my American friends and colleagues find extremely hard to pronounce). I am a mechanical engineer by profession and currently work in the aerospace industry near Seattle WA.
I was born and brought up in the culturally active city of Pune - India where I completed my undergraduate engineering studies.
I came to USA in Aug 2002 and did my masters in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan State University (I know another Taranaa Star-Vishal Khaparde from my MSU days).
Since I can remember I have always liked Indian music mainly Hindi film songs and also a variety of Marathi music.
Because of my mother’s liking of radio I grew up listening to Vividh-Bharati and thoroughly enjoyed Binaka (then Cibaka) Geetmala;
Madhumalati; Ek-Funkar and so many similar programs.
As a kid I went through some acting courses and later in my college days got to participate in a few inter/intra collegiate drama competitions.
I always liked to sing. My mother as well as my father (both enjoy singing) have supported
my liking towards music and performing art in general. My younger brother –Bhushan who stays in USA and works near Chicago is a huge fan of Sonu Nigam and also enjoys singing.
During my undergraduate engineering years I took a few lessons in classical vocal music from Pt. Rajan Kulkarni in Pune but could not continue due to the usual difficulties (read-job, education etc.)
I knew that there existed Karaoke tracks and you can sing along but it took me some convincing from Aniruddha Daptardar to enroll into
Taranaa and I am glad that listened to him and joined Taranaa! I absolutely love it to be a part of this very talented, friendly and encouraging musical community!

Who encouraged you to sing early on?
I think as a kid I started singing some Bollywood songs and the first one popular amongst
my family and neighbors was my dance and music performance on “dafli waaaaale” from movie Sargam. Since then my mother encouraged me to take formal lessons which I did not do until I went to college!

How encouraging is your family towards your pursuit of musical interest? Does your spouse have hang-ups about your staring at the "red screen" at every given opportunity? ;)
Both my parents are very supportive about my hobby. My father himself can sing very well. Even better my wife and my in laws are all artists! Yes my wife Smitha does get hang-ups about me spending time at the red-screen when I am not singing the song of her choiceJ -just kidding. Apart from being a medical doctor my wife is an excellent Bharatnatyam dancer and enjoys singing. She is a very good critique to my singing. My mother in law is an accomplished Hindustani classical singer and father in law is a great Tabla-nawaj, drama director, writer, poet and a composer.

Can you describe in your words what good singing means ? And what is the most important aspect of good singing, sur, taal, diction, poetry, feelings, or sounding like the original singer?
I think Surr is the first and foremost important part of any kind of music. Taal, laay, expressions ( bhav), and diction respectively are the next important aspects. As far as film music is considered the karaoke singing inherently gets compared to the original and would be considered the best if it creates the same effect on the listener as the original. I feel that good light music singing is something that appeals to the masses- the one that is easy to understand, and leaves a soulful impact on the listener.

Would you like to share some weaknesses of your singing and your effort to improve them?
There is too much that I need to learn and keep on learning but for now I am focusing on improving my lower notes. Also I am trying to learn recording with the modern sound editing software and the gurus on Taranaa are always helping me with that.

Do you think certain foods affect or help your singing?
Too much food or too little food can affect your energy levels and hence the singing. More than food I have noticed that breathing exercises do help my singing.

If at all, you get a chance to choose and sing with any male/female Bollywood singer, who would that be? Why?
Alka Yagnik- because I think she is the best female playback Bollywood has got today.

Who do you style your singing after? If no one, then what do you think is your singing style?
I would really like myself to sound like Kishore da but that is just not possible. My voice more suits to Rafi ji, Manna De, and Talat sahab’s songs.

What aspects of Taraana.com made you decide to become a member?
Great forum, friendly and talented participants and great tracks were the things that made me become a member here. The feedback and encouragement makes one do their best every time thus helping to hone their skills.

If you have to suggest some improvements for Taraana.com what would they be?
A more user friendly graphic user interface of the Taranaa Karaoke Player would help much.

Do you record in a studio or home? What equipment do you use for home recording?
I record on my laptop with a basic mic at home. I think it is about time to go for better recording equipment

Would you like to receive feedback in public (Taranaa forum) or through private messages? What aspects should be considered carefully while giving feedback in public?
Both types of feedback are welcome. There are users who do not want to write in public but still want to express their thoughts are very welcome to write personal messages. While giving public feedback one should first talk about the good parts and then suggest improvements. The feedback should always be encouraging.

Lastly, if you had a choice of choosing five new tracks for Taranaa library what would they be?

  • Mere mehboob – Movie Mere Mehboob
  • Na ja kahi ab na ja-Movie-Mere Humdum Mere Dost
  • Puchho na kaise maine rain bitai - Movie-Meri Surat Teri Aankhe
  • Chahoonga Mai tuze saanj savere-Movie-Dosti
  • Mujhe e jindagi divana kar de main aapne aap se –Movie -Bindiya
